MUSIC Education at A-S

Beginning in the Lower Division, students build a strong foundation in musicianship through an engaging, hands-on curriculum focused on singing, music literacy, rhythm, instrumental performance, and ensemble collaboration. As they progress through the School, boys deepen their skills through opportunities including Chorus, Orchestra, private instrumental instruction, theatrical productions, and electives. Through performance, field trips, and technology, Allen-Stevenson fosters creativity, discipline, confidence, and collaboration while nurturing technical musicianship and an appreciation for diverse musical traditions and the transformative power of music.

Music Department Mission

While fostering personal growth in music, we also highlight the boys' ability to work, play, and create together. Practical experience is emphasized in the classroom through instrument playing, singing, and musical games. The ability to sing accurately with a clear tone, to interpret pitch and rhythmic notation, and to participate in group ensembles is one of three primary goals outlined in our curriculum.

Instrumental music and singing give boys a powerful way to understand themselves and the world. When young boys make music together, they learn to listen, collaborate, and express emotion with confidence. These are skills that stay with them long after the final note fades.
