Lower Division Librarian, Ms. Alegre, welcomed kindergarten students to “The Egg,” a cozy, welcoming space for our youngest Allen-Stevenson readers. Upon their first visit to the library, each boy was invited to take out a book and choose a "stuffy" reading partner. Stuffed animals prove to be good listeners. Boys love to read…and we encourage them in many creative ways! #AllenStevensonLTC #AllenStevensonManyWays #AllenStevensonKindergarten #AllenStevensonLowerDivision

Our new first-grade teacher, Mr. Brill, invited his students to think about a special place where they feel calm. This exercise encourages young boys to tell their stories through words and images. The boys were eager to share their drawings and calm places with Mr. Brill and with each other. Furthermore, visualizing a place where they feel calm helps build essential interpersonal and self-awareness skills. Providing the boys with the tools to harness their own emotions and access empathy for others helps to lay the groundwork for successful problem-solving and learning! #AllenStevensonFirstGrade #AllenStevensonRelationalLearners #AllenStevensonLowerDivision

Second-grade students started a t-shirt factory to reinforce some important math skills! With partners, the boys chose a company name, slogan, and logo and decorated their own t-shirts! During this creatively calculated unit of study, students worked on addition and subtraction with 2 and 3-digit numbers. Furthermore, the boys applied place value, groupings of ten, equivalence, addition strategies, and regrouping for subtraction. Allen-Stevenson's third-grade students embarked upon a yearlong study of the United States, culminating in the spectacular Mr. America showcase. The emcee and Head of the Lower Division, Mr. Warner, got into the spirit of our stars and stripes as the boys brought their knowledge of their regions and individual states. A-S encourages boys early on to confidently engage in public speaking, and the boys researched, wrote, and delivered their own clever speeches. Together students invited the audience to join them in singing a rousing rendition of "This Land is Your Land!" Congratulations to the boys, our wonderful third-grade faculty, Theatre Director Ms. Robles, and to all the faculty and staff who made today's performance a huge hit! #AllenStevensonHistory #AllenStevensonGeography #AllenStevensonArts #AllenStevensonThirdGrade #AllenStevensonPassionate #AllenStevensonResearch

Mr. Arte's fifth-grade math students began the year by understanding place value - from billions to thousandths - and practicing writing numbers in standard and word form. The boys were very excited to apply these newly acquired skills to fill out checks. Rotating around stations in the room, the boys could read about and discuss scenarios that might require a check which included: being compensated for work completed, paying their portion of the rent, or donating to a meaningful charity. While outside of Allen-Stevenson, paper checks may be used less frequently today, in the classroom they served as an engaging practical math exercise! #AllenStevensonMath #AllenStevensonFifthGrade #PracticalMath

Sixth-grade art students explored the Surrealist creative process called, "Exquisite Corpse," whereby students add on to an original drawing that is mostly hidden. The artists can only see the bottom of the original and are process results in some wonderfully surreal creations! The Surrealists sought to break with convention, and Exquisite Corpse hinges on unpredictability, imagination, and collaboration—forces Surrealists routinely used to disrupt preconceived or predictable expectations of art. When revealed, the boys were delighted to see how each Exquisite Corpse evolved. #AllenStevensonArt #AllenStevensonCreativity #AllenStevensonSixthGrade #AllenStevensonManyWays

Seventh-grade science students studying DNA took an exciting trip to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories DNA Learning Center in Brooklyn (DNALC)! There, the boys swabbed samples of their own mitochondrial DNA and used a PCR to amplify a section of their DNA which was then sent for sequencing. Back in the classroom, students performed bioinformatic analysis of their own DNA sequences to explore theories behind human evolution and how they may be connected to their classmates and to others around the world. #AllenStevensonScience #AllenStevensonSeventhGrade #AllenStevensonResearch #AllenStevensonPassionate #RealWorldScience

Wearing their favorite sports jerseys (a Student Council initiative in honor of the Mets and Yankees making the playoffs) on this beautiful fall morning, the boys gathered data about air quality in Allen-Stevenson's neighborhood. Eighth-grade science students first ventured into our 77th St Subway station with Science Teacher Katie Donahue to capture air-quality readings using a Flow monitor which measures particulate matter (PM 2.5, PM 10), nitrogen dioxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air we breathe. Above ground, the boys enjoyed taking samples in various local places (hospital waste off-loading area, subway grates, car exhausts, and side streets). #AllenStevensonScience #AllenStevensonEighthGrade #AllenStevensonResearch
