1ST DESMOND COLE HONORARY RESERVOIR RUN
About 20 alumni, friends and teachers ran the 1.8 mile bridle path around the Central Park reservoir in crisp 42 degree weather. Traditionalists favored the tight 1.6 mile path around the fence from the Desmond Cole era. But popularity of the park necessitated the bridle path for most of our runners. They were joined by the Allen-Stevenson mascot, the Unicorn.
DAYTIME OPEN HOUSE & ALUMNI SPORTS
More than 80 alumni and relatives returned to the School during the day for full octane basketball with alumni and faculty/staff players, very spirited dodgeball, and nostalgic kickball on the roof. Eighth and ninth grade students gave tours of the building that many alumni hadn’t seen since they left. Current students rehearsed Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Patience” as former students remembered who had each part in their era. Alumni children played with drums in the music room as parents caught up with friends over coffee.
THE MAIN EVENT
In the evening, alumni joined by current and former teachers had cocktails in the Assembly Hall. They were entertained by a Celebration of Athletics including remarks by current Athletic Director, Rich Alifano, a photo montage of team photos, sports candids, and photos of former coaches, as well as nine former coaches as special guests. Monica Matthew, Chef Charlie and the rest of the kitchen team cooked up a delicious buffet dinner and reunion classes caught up on many years.
FRIDAY NIGHT CLASS PARTIES
Seven classes (1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001) also celebrated with their own class parties Friday night in restaurants and bars around the city.
As I see it...
As you can see from the pictures, the Alumni Weekend was a great hit. It seems to get better each year and is increasingly becoming a real weekend event. On Friday evening, reunion classes gathered in various restaurants and bars around the city to catch up with old friends and on Saturday there was a run around the Reservoir, a very high level basketball game in the gym, the usual dodgeball craziness and kickball on the roof, and the opportunity to watch one of the final rehearsals of this year’s Gilbert and Sullivan, Patience, in the Assembly Hall. (This month’s picture finds me among a gaggle of lovesick maidens.) On Saturday evening coaches, old and new, joined their former charges in a celebration of the School’s athletic program. It was hard to tell who was more delighted to be back—the old coaches or the old boys. Next year’s reunion classes are those ending in a 2 or a 7 – 2007, 2002, 1997 and so forth. Hope to see you there next year.
