Poetry and Shakespeare with Jack Salomon ‘62

On October 23, Jack Salomon ’62 visited our 6th grade boys and recited Shakespeare and poems for them, some of which were of his own creation.
Mr. Salomon discussed each poem with the boys, giving them the opportunity to ask him questions in order to better understand the meaning behind each one. He also shared facts about his time at Allen-Stevenson, some of which were highlighted in his poems. The boys’ favorites included: “This Boy,” an original by Mr. Salomon about a boy at Allen Stevenson, and “You Are Quoting Shakespeare,” by Bernard Levin, a poem consisting entirely of words and phrases created by Shakespeare.

“The boys really enjoyed their hour with Mr. Salomon,” Pete Haarmann, Sixth Grade English Teacher, said. “They asked insightful questions about the poems, and were able to find the balance of funny and serious within many of them.”

Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive “enlightened traditional” approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
