Why a K-9 School?

Advantages of a K-9 School

  • We are experts on boys’ learning and development and intentionally focus on the elementary and middle school years. We consistently evaluate our curriculum to ensure that the learning remains developmentally appropriate for boys in kindergarten through grade nine.

  • Our student population by design is small, which lends itself to a more intimate focus on our 3 As—Academics, Arts and Athletics—allowing each and every boy the opportunity to experience different facets of school life without compromising the wide variety of choices. Not having a high school allows us to devote all of our resources and energy to the elementary and middle school years.

  • We provide a solid foundation and the necessary tools that will enrich a boy’s academic endeavors and also nurture his social and emotional well-being.

  • We ensure that every boy throughout his time at Allen-Stevenson has a chance to explore leadership roles that foster independence and collaboration. Starting in Lower School, students are offered leadership and mentoring opportunities that allow for positive relationship building across all grade levels.

  • In many ways, there are significant differences between a 5-year-old entering Kindergarten and a 14- or 15-year-old entering high school. What may seem to be the right school for a 5-year-old might not necessarily be the right fit for the same boy at 14 or 15. A boy graduating from Allen-Stevenson has the opportunity to select the best high school for the boy he has become. Feeling well prepared, he is met with new and exciting academic challenges and primed to cultivate new friendships and become involved in extra-curricular activities.

  • By the time a boy is preparing for high school, he will have attained a cognitive maturity that will increase his decision-making skills. Having a boy participate in the process of selecting his high school is a gift that makes him invested in his future success. When a boy has a significant role in choosing his high school, the experience is more likely to be rewarding.

  • Our Secondary School Counseling Office works closely with boys and their families to assure that each boy is placed in a school that is a good match for the next stage of his education. Boys and their families are given much support throughout the application process. We know our boys extremely well and have cultivated, and continue to cultivate, strong relationships with ongoing schools.

Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive “enlightened traditional” approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
