Recognizing the Life and Accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In Lower School Community Time on Friday, January 15 we recognized the life and accomplishments of Civil Rights Activist Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by doing what we do best – educating.
Boys gathered on Zoom to learn about Dr. King’s many impressive life accomplishments and to engage in a broader discussion on the importance of activism.

They learned about other important activists who supported Dr. King during the Civil Rights Movement, including Bayard Rustin, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Mahalia Jackson.

Boys also learned about present-day activists – many of whom are children like Greta Thunberg – who are fighting for important causes around the world.

Our teachers emphasized that everyone can be an activist. Community Life + Diversity Co-Director and First Grade Teacher Sophy Joseph taught the boys about the MLK, Jr. Day of Service, and inspired our community to use this day as an opportunity to serve our New York City community.

She got the ball rolling there and then by creating beautiful cards with messages of love and encouragement to drop off at food banks where low-income New Yorkers will receive them when they pick up food.
