Fourth Grade Urban Planners Design City Blocks

During math class with Sarah Luposello, fourth graders took on the role of urban planners and were tasked with designing a city block.
They had to use their knowledge of rectangular area and apply it to a real-world situation by figuring out how to incorporate a park, apartment building, pool, and restaurant into the 500x260 square foot block.

First, our engineers calculated the total area of the block then calculated the dimensions of each block component, including a sidewalk with a width that is ADA handicap accessible.

Finally, the boys presented their projects to an audience of their peers, sharing their calculations and showing their persuasion skills by selling the group on why their design is best.
