Art Appreciation Class Combines Art, History, and Technology

Our boys start taking Art Appreciation class with Resource Teacher Kathy Allen in the Second Grade, combining art, history, and technology.
During class, they observe and learn about the work of an artist, discuss a central theme, and demonstrate their own creative skills.
For the Vincent van Gogh unit, students learned the basic elements of art: line, shape, form, value, color, space and texture. They were then given the challenge of creating a landscape image with a horizon line running across the paper representing where the sky and land meet. Each boy used the Art Set app to create their landscape using varied lines and color.
During another unit, they learned about Henri Matisse and his use of brightly colored paper and scissors to create vibrant collages. Each boy then created a cut paper collage fashioned in this style.

Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive “enlightened traditional” approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
