Creative Art Start - Rob McCallum, PhD. and Cindy Maguire, PhD.
Creative Art Start has a specialty focus on woodshop, art and film. The art camp is a fun-filled journey into new territories creative and educational for girls and boys between the ages of 6 and 14 years. Classes are small and children receive individualized attention, through an innovative art curriculum tailored to their interests and needs. The teachers are highly qualified artists and art educators from Allen-Stevenson and New York University. Dr. Rob McCallum has over 30 years experience in art education and also in child development in the arts. Dr. Cindy Maguire has 20 years experience in fine art and art education with a focus on the education of the whole child and the importance of play in art making.
Creative Art Start helps the camper to: express ideas and feelings creatively, gain new art skills and refine old ones, discover his/her own art style, work independently with guidance, make new friends, create and find new ideas through play. Campers are divided into age groups that alternate between the Woodshop, Art, Ideas and Media. Activities the campers engage in are mixed media including painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking, kiln fused glass, ceramics, puppetry, computer art, film editing and video, photography, bookmaking, printmaking, animation, design engineering, fort building and derby car racing. Campers may also play games and sport in the gym and Central Park. Emphasis is placed on fun, collaboration, comradeship and physical co-ordination. Art supplies and equipment are provided.
Children in Creative Art Start should pick that as their morning elective to get the most from the program. They are free to pick any elective for the afternoon offering.
The Grapplin’ Gorillas Youth Wrestling School is the only year-round wrestling program in Manhattan that focuses on teaching children grades Pre-K and up. Our summer camp is open to boys and girls entering Kindergarten through Ninth grades, and is ideal for children who enjoy physical play. This program will help improve agility, strength, flexibility, and overall wellness. Our coaches have years of experience running youth wrestling programs in the Manhattan private school community, and our counselors are Allen-Stevenson alumni who are wrestling in competitive high school and college programs. Students of all skill levels and abilities are welcome. The camp will combine wrestling with many fun games that give students the freedom to roll, tumble, push and pull. Among some of the activities offered in the Grapplin’ Gorillas Summer Camp are Wrestling technique and live wrestling, open mat time, rolling and tumbling, obstacle courses, Sharks and Minnows, Whales Tails, Guardian Pinball, and Bionic Ball.
On Friday of each week we hold our Takedown Tournament!
Children will have fun while developing their skills in baseball, flag football, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, and other exciting gym games. They will get to watch themselves shine during the daily Highlight Center.
Children in Three-A-Day will not be at Allen-Stevenson for the morning elective. They can pick an elective for the afternoon offering if they wish.

Who are we?
A-S Summer Staff: All main A-S Summer programs are run by skilled Allen-Stevenson faculty members. They are all experts in both their fields and in supporting the growth of children. The program leaders are all kind, caring, enthusiastic and excited to share their summer with your children. Elective leaders are either Allen-Stevenson faculty, trusted program providers who have worked with the School's Alligator Soup program for years, or qualified and skilled professionals who also have demonstrated an ability to work well with children. No matter the activities your child signs up for this summer, he or she is sure to work with knowledgeable, fun, and engaging adults. There is also a nurse on-site for the entire summer.
Camp Director: Ben Neulander has been at Allen-Stevenson for 12 years. He currently teaches American History to his sixth grade homeroom and serves as the Assistant Head of the Middle School. Ben has worked at summer camps in his home town of Cherry Hill, NJ, and at the Trinity School in New York City.
What does my child need to bring to camp each day? *While a daily snack is provided, children will need to bring their own lunch each day. Lunches will be stored in the kitchen refrigerator for the morning, so you do not need a big, insulated lunch bag. Please be aware that Allen-Stevenson is a nut-aware school and that no food containing nuts or produced in a facility that also processes nuts is allowed at school.
*A full list of required and suggested items will be sent out in early June.
