We had a fantastic winter season in athletics. The boys and coaches worked very well together and made a challenging schedule a success.
The Varsity Basketball team had a winning season with a 7-4 record. If not for injuries to three starters (James Wlodarczak '19, Federico Arengi-Bentivoglio '19, and Will Schlesinger '18) this team had a very good chance of capturing the coveted league title. However, what was most impressive was the effort and teamwork that occurred after the injuries. Led by Eighth Grader Holden Lipton’s scoring and shot blocking, Eighth Grader Ben Forman’s ball handling and toughness, and the incredible hard work and effort from Sebastien Chesse '19, Jayden Yablon '19, Jackson Deans '19, and Daniel Dudley '18, the team captured seven wins and stayed competitive in every game. Lastly, we also received invaluable help during games from several Junior Varsity players throughout the season: Zale Peart '18, Ethan Fowler '19, Lucas Simon '19.
Our Varsity Wrestlers continued their work on fundamentals. The boys all improved their takedowns, shots, sprawls, bottom and top referee position, and escapes. They also learned about nutrition and how to fuel their bodies properly for optimal performance. We had a mix of experience on our team this season. There were first-year wrestlers learning the basics of match strategy and positioning, and, we had veterans like Valen McCallum '18 and Ben Nayman '19 whose experience and skill stood out this season.
Each year on Junior Varsity Basketball we have a wide range of ability and experience amongst our players. The boys are divided into two equal teams, Blue and Gold, and play a rotating game schedule. Our Gold team’s signature win this season was against St. Bernard’s. Our eighth and ninth grade players combined their experience with a great deal of effort to edge out the win. The Blue team then followed up with a close victory at Browning.
