1:1 Laptop Program

1:1 Laptop Program Overview

Program Summary

In the past 10 years, we have witnessed an intensification of the productive use of technology to support teaching and learning and, further, we increasingly see a society into which a boy will enter where his “...future and his technology will be firmly intertwined.”

At home, most boys have at their fingertips technological tools and resources they use for social interaction, various forms of entertainment, and school homework, but which they turn to less so for organization, working through personal ideas and projects, and learning on their own when faced with a question or problem. Most boys have much of the knowledge necessary to do so, but are not so disposed as, for the majority of boys, these things have not become part of their natural inclination: their culture.

It is our contention that a 1 : 1 program - with steady, consistent access to technological resources and the education to go with it - can help change a boy’s learning culture in school and, thus, his behavior out of school, and into the future where he will be called upon to make use of technology – become “firmly intertwined” with it – in a world that will provide easy access and require expert facility and, especially, the wisdom to employ it freely and profoundly.

Objective

To implement a 1 : 1 program in grades 5-9 to support the Allen-Stevenson curriculum and help boys employ ever-present technology safely, ethically, and intelligently.

Allen-Stevenson’s distinctive “enlightened traditional” approach educates boys to become scholars and gentlemen.
